PREFERRED LIGHTING

The paper with the title „Identifying preferred surface, colour and lighting characteristics“ is published in the Journal of the International Colour Association. Based on Shigenobu Kobayashi’s ‘Color Image Scale’ method the two contrasting pairs soft-hard and warm-cool are introduced as comparative dimensions in order to evaluate the impact of surface texture, colours, and lighting quality on visual perception. These design options may facilitate the choice of lighting, colours, and surfaces for indoor spaces.

METHODS TO EVALUATE SPATIAL SETTINGS

These short descriptions of methods to evaluate spatial settings are collected to give designers a quick overview about mehods for empiric research. This entry was first published on the Interior Architecture Research blog of the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture (HSLU T&A).   Read more

ASSESSING SPATIAL QUALITIES

The perception of a spatial setting’s quality equally depends on the architectural product and its properties and the qualifying person. A scientific approach to the question of how spaces are perceived thus requires comprehension of both the existing subjective components and the objective facts. Read more

PERFORMING SPACE

The interdisciplinary project Performing Space investigated how different spaces influence musicians’ daily practice. The results of this project provided insights how the practice and rehearsing activities can be improved.

APPEARANCE OF TYPICAL INTERIOR MATERIALS

Scientific publication „Influence of lighting conditions on the appearance of typical interior materials“ by Dr. Ruta Lasauskaite Schüpbach, Markus Reisinger und Björn Schrader is published in Color Research & Application. The article reports two experiments that investigated how lighting influences perception of various materials. The first experiment shows that cool color temperature of the light source is preferred for materials of blue color (cold hue). Warm color temperature of the light source is preferred for materials of warm hue materials and those materials that have natural reference (e.g., grass). The second study shows that materials tend to appear softer under LED light source compared to other light sources in our setup. Finally, future directions in this research area are discussed.

SENSORY LIVING

Four member schools of the network Perception of Space in Architecture and Culture explore this summer the theme of Sensory Living. Focus is the design of interior spaces.

The Summer School took place form 15.07. – 26.07.2013 in Lucerne. It was organized by the department of Interior Architecture of the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture. Markus Reisinger was responsible for this 10 day intensive program.

ACCURATE COLORS IN COMPUTER RENDERINGS

Computer renderings are indispensable means in presenting ideas and designs in the lighting industry of today. The quality of the lighting simulation provides an indication of how the suggested design looks like when realized.  For this reason, the accuracy of color in lighting simulation is critical as it needs to communicate a clear picture of the suggested lighting effect to stakeholders. To achieve accurate color representations on the display is not always easy. Decisions need to be taken on which aspects eventually to compromise. A problematic situation appears as lights are used that have a higher saturation than can be rendered on the display.
More about this problem and a strategy how to deal with it is described in the paper Considerations for planning colored lighting by Chia-Chun Liu and Markus Reisinger. The paper was presented last year in October in Venice on the conference Color and Light in Architecture.

DESIGNING A ROOM FOR LIGHTING EVALUATION

Lighting can only be evaluated together with the environment. If there is light present in a space or architectural environment, we can have a visual sensation of this scene with our eyes. Lighting thus affects how the physical scene with its objects and surfaces appears to us humans. Read more

COLOR FORM CORRESPONDENCE

A universal correspondence of color and form is a tempting idea, but cannot be supported by evidences from our experiments. We tested correspondence between two color combination of chromatic light and form. From the obtained results no simple equation can be extracted to describe the relation between character of a chromatic light combinations and the expressed character of a geometric element. What was found is a vague alignment of form to specific colors e.g. yellow and orange to round shapes. The most likely reasons evident for such choice is that a color combination that was liked corresponded to a form that was liked, thus choice out of hedonic motivation. Read more

FIND IT RIGHT AWAY

To study effects of lighting is an endeavor that involves multiple disciplines. To gather the information that really helps to increase understanding is often troublesome. Thought that through data networks much of that information is in principle instantly available, the success depends on the quality of the strategy. When it comes to search engines Google obviously cannot be omitted, partly because of features others lack.
Custom search is an powerful option to find information in effective way. The search function integrated on the top right of this page assists by focusing on hand picked information sources to find lighting relevant information. Try it out and give us your feedback.
